In Australia, Rottweiler is often referred to as “Rottie”. Rottweilers are thought to have descended from Molossus, an ancient dog breed from Greece. It is often considered whether all Mastiff-type dogs originated from Molossus, however there is some debate over this. Rottwielers most likely descended from Mastiffs. Referred to as “Drover” dogs, Droving dogs were capable of walking livestock over great distances. These Drover dogs having a very long history, were essential in bringing and taking food to different peoples and cities in the “Old World”. It was also their job to guard herd from predators, to make sure the cattle stayed the course, and capable of travelling long distances. Equiped with a strong guarding instinct, these intelligent, robust dogs are build for great physical endurance.
Rottweilers accompanied the Romans through Germany. Many were left behind, and in the town of Rottweil in southern Germany, they became the breed we know today. They were originally bred to pull butcher carts to markets, they were also used to guard live stock. Rottweilers quickly became excellent police dogs, they were used as guards during the first and the second world wars.
The Rottweilers are self-assured, steady and fearless. He reacts to his surroundings with great alertness and at the same time even-tempered.
In Australia, dog breeds are separated into 7 groups. Since Rottie are bred for herding, they belong to Group 6 – Utility. For a list of all the breeds in Group 6 – Utility, please visit the Australian National Kennel Club.
