Samoyed

The name Samoyed comes form the Samoyedic peoples of Siberia. The Samoyedic people who speak Samoyedic languages are a group of people native to the Northern arctic Russia. The Samoyedic were also known as Tenets People, they depended heavily on fishing and reindeer herding to support their lifestyle. Samoyedic people had a very close bond with their white dogs called the”Bjelkeir“, today these dogs are widely recognised as the Samoyed. Some other names for Samoyeds are: Sammies, Sami or Sammy.

These beautiful, fluffy white dogs were used for herding reindeer, hunting and pulling sledges. Females were kept for companionship, warmth during colder months and breeding. When Russians started to explore Siberia in the 17th and 18th century, they quickly recognised and started to appreciate the beauty of these magnificent dogs. The Samoyed even won the hearts of the Russian Emperor’s family (The Czar), some were given as gifts to other royal families in Europe by the Czar.

During the late 1800s, Samoyeds started to arrive in England. Since then, the breed remain very popular all over the world. Even though Samoyed originated from a colder climate, they have adopted very well to warmer climates including Australia. Samoyeds are easily recognised by their shinny, white, fluffy coat.

Samoyeds can be a little stubborn, early training & socialising is recommended. They are happiest when they are involved in an activity such a pulling a cart.

As Samoyeds are an arctic breed, the other two family members are Alaskan Malamute and Siberian Husky.

In Australia, dog breeds are separated into 7 groups. Since Samoyeds are bred for pulling sleds, Samoyeds belongs to Group 6 – Utility. For a list of all the breeds in Group 6 – Utility, please visit the Australian National Kennel Club.
